Our director’s notes are very opinionated as the directors are the ones who become most familiar with the cast and who have the most “personal” relationships with them. They’re also the ones who receive the most grief from our players. Kid wakes up in a bad mood - the director’s job is going to suck that day. You see, everyone behaves the same whether you are on TV or not. These guys get up at home in a bad mood, wouldn’t you suppose they would give their mom’s or sibling’s hell just because? I know I sure did…
Below are the actual Director’s Notes that correspond to the episode you all saw last night (the part not in italics is my commentary from my perspective now, looking back on everything).
TJ shows up at the house to hold the next nomination. Now people aren’t avoiding being thrown in, they are volunteering to go in, and the competition is tough. Paula, Ashli, Jenn, Johanna, and Evelyn all want it, so it comes down to a vote, with Paula, Ashli, and Jenn winning the chance to compete. Evelyn can see that the alliance is taking over this game and will never let her go into a face-off, so she gets pissed and storms out of the room. When TJ finds out that Ashli is going into the face-off, he questions if she is just trying to go home. She says she doesn’t want to go home, but she would rather lose in a face-off than just quit.
What exactly does this last statement mean? In my competitive brain, she has just laid out a disclaimer that essentially tells me she knows she is going home but she is gonna give it the “Old high school try…” We pick these kids to compete and sometimes we get kids who give up.
Kelly Anne is pissed about today’s nomination. She thinks this house is full of “pansies” who don’t want to compete against Evelyn so they don’t want to send her into a Faceoff. She also thinks Ashli is playing the game the wrong way because she’s going into a face-off that she can’t even compete in. Kelly Anne thinks Ashli knows she’s doing something wrong because she won’t even look Kelly Anne in the eye today.
Dunbar confides in Paula that the reason why he got so upset last night when Colie called him an “asshole” was because his opinion of himself is all he has. He believes one’s thoughts are extremely powerful and says, “Just remember, Paula, the belief you can do something is the reason you can do something.” They talk about the flirting that has gone on between the two of them here on the island and Paula promises to smooth it over with Julie [his girlfriend back home] and let her know they are “just friends”. Paula tells Dunbar that Johnny, Kenny, and Dunbar are the most miserable guys on the island because they all need to be “fed, sexed, and sleeped”.
Awesome, these kids are beginning to feel the effects of the game and we get to see how they react to the different situations put before them. It is very interesting to watch from a documentary perspective- as our brand of reality is just that- with the added ability to create our own atmosphere for our cast.
